BuzzFeed News: Volunteers Help Reunite Dogs with Owners separated at the US Mexico Border

In April 2021, BuzzFeed News reported on Mascotas Para Migrantes (Pets for Migrants), a volunteer group helping asylum-seekers at the US–Mexico border bring their dogs and cats with them into the United States. For people who had already lost their homes, communities, and sense of normalcy, a pet was often a vital source of comfort and emotional support.

Started by immigration attorney Taylor Levy and communications worker Jordyn Rozensky, the group helps pet parents navigate state and federal pet-import rules — reuniting families like Erisema and her dog Kandi, who settled into a new life together in Miami. When a pet can't make the crossing, the volunteers help find them a safe new home.
