Storm Prep for Pets

As residents of Bermuda, we are all too familiar with the threat of hurricanes. While we take steps to secure our homes and protect our families, it’s equally important to ensure that our pets are safe and well-prepared for these severe weather events.

Here’s a pawfect guide to help you prepare your furry friends for the next hurricane, and the impawtence of registering them in the PadsPass microchip database.

Just as you would prepare an emergency kit for yourself and your family, your pets need one too. Prepare a kit with:

  • A week's supply of food AND water

  • Medications - refill now if you're running low

  • Your pet is wearing a form of identification like a collar with your contact info on it or AirTag/Tile locator

  • Comfort items - they will likely be bored inside for extended periods of time.

  • A first aid kit

  • Sanitation supplies - accidents happen when outside time is limited

  • A leash

Next, update your pet’s identification.

Hurricanes increase the risk of lost pets so ensuring your pet is microchipped and registered with PadsPass is very impawtant. This local database is vital for reuniting lost pets with their families.

Next, designate a safe, windowless room for your pets during the storm. Bring outdoor animals inside and have an evacuation plan that includes pet-friendly locations. During the hurricane stay calm, keep your pets in the safe room, and monitor weather updates. After the hurricane, check for hazards before letting pets outside. Keep them indoors until it's safe, and monitor for stress.

By taking these steps to safeguard your pets, you not only pawtect their well-being during a storm but also increase the chances of a swift reunion if you get separated.

Remember, registering your pet with PadsPass is one of the most critical steps you can take to ensure their safety. Stay prepared, stay safe, and let’s make sure all members of our family, human and animal alike, are protected when this and the next hurricane strikes.
